Post Haryana results, tension in MVA

New Delhi: Following Congress’s defeat in the Haryana Assembly elections, insiders suggest that Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA)—comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP—will focus on winning the upcoming state elections before addressing internal disputes.
Sources privy to discussions reveal that all MVA partners have agreed to prioritize candidate selection based on winnability. Tentative seat-sharing numbers indicate Uddhav’s Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress may each get around 100 seats, with the remaining 88 going to NCP. Maharashtra has 288 assembly seats.
Regarding Uddhav Thackeray’s recent statement about supporting a CM candidate from Congress or NCP, Ramesh Chennithala, Congress’s Maharashtra General Secretary, said, “There is no tussle over the CM face before the elections. Post-election, the decision will be made. Our only aim is to dislodge the corrupt government here.” He dismissed concerns that Haryana’s results would influence Maharashtra’s elections, emphasizing that both states have different political dynamics.
Political experts say MVA partners are wary of the BJP’s powerful election machinery. To compete effectively, the MVA will need unity and cooperation, especially as the BJP is adept at mobilizing its cadres and crafting strong narratives. A political analyst warned, “If MVA fails to cooperate, BJP could exploit a narrative that turns the tide in their favour.”
Although no official discussions about a chief ministerial candidate have occurred, insiders suggest a mutual understanding within the alliance that Uddhav Thackeray would likely become CM if MVA wins. One insider noted, “Congress might follow the Bihar model, where BJP ceded the CM post to Janata Dal (United) despite having more seats.”
The election outcome in Maharashtra will not only determine the next state government but also set the tone for broader national alliances as the MVA eyes consolidate its position against the BJP.
