Post-poll reshuffle likely in BJP, government

There is significant tension among BJP office-bearers and ministers of the Union government regarding the election results in five states. The source of this tension lies in the major changes that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to implement—at any moment—within both his own ministerial team and the BJP’s central organizational structure.

Following the elections, the Prime Minister’s primary agenda has now shifted to effecting changes within both the party organization and the government. The fear of losing their positions is currently haunting a majority of Union ministers and party office-bearers. Speculation is that these changes could extend to the state level as well.

If the BJP secures a victory in Bengal, the Prime Minister may undertake several significant experiments. Ever since the appointment of the young leader Nitin Nabin as the BJP’s National President, all eyes have been fixed on the anticipated large-scale reshuffle within both the government and the party organization.

These changes are set to occur at a juncture when elections are approaching in the country’s most populous state—Uttar Pradesh—along with Punjab and Uttarakhand. While the reshuffle will undoubtedly be executed with these specific states in mind, a broader strategy encompassing all states scheduled for elections prior to the 2029 General Elections may also be formulated.

Elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab are scheduled to take place in February—just eight months from now. In the interim, several significant political developments have occurred. In Bihar, the BJP has made a fresh start by appointing Samrat Choudhary as Chief Minister. JDU leader Nitish Kumar, who served as Chief Minister for 20 years, has moved to the Rajya Sabha.

In a major political coup against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), seven MPs from Punjab have defected to join the BJP. It is possible that further defections may yet occur in Maharashtra as well. One or two of these leaders from other parties are also expected to be accommodated within the government. Punjab poses a significant challenge for the BJP, as the party currently lacks a substantial independent support base in the state. It appears unlikely that the recent defection of AAP MPs will yield any significant results, given that neither Raghav Chadha nor the MPs who joined along with him possess any substantial mass base in Punjab.

The BJP is determined to form the government in Punjab this time around, come what may. It is possible that the BJP may contest the elections in alliance with the Akalis and in such a scenario, a leader from the Akali Dal would likely have to be inducted as a minister in the Union Cabinet.

However, the first priority is to finalize the composition of the new team to be led by Nitin Nabin. Sources suggest that, barring a handful of individuals, the organizational structure is likely to undergo a major overhaul. Two or three members currently serving in the organization may be shifted to government roles. However, the primary objective will be to induct young and fresh faces into the organization. Several individuals currently active at the state level may be brought to Delhi.
