As Kashmir gears up for the annual Amarnath Yatra, security agencies are turning to technology like never before. In a significant step aimed at ensuring the safety of pilgrims and tourists, Anantnag Police has launched the QR-code based “Pahchan App”, a digital verification platform designed to authenticate every registered service provider operating along the pilgrimage route.
The initiative arrives at a time when security remains a primary concern across Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism and pilgrimage sectors. The deadly attack in Pahalgam last year served as a stark reminder that even areas known for peace and hospitality require constant vigilance. The incident not only shocked the nation but also prompted a comprehensive reassessment of security arrangements in tourist destinations and religious pilgrimage zones across the Valley.
Against this backdrop, authorities have sought to blend traditional security measures with modern technology, creating a system that focuses on prevention, verification and accountability.
The newly introduced Pahchan App enables police to digitally register and verify individuals providing services to pilgrims and tourists, including pony handlers, pithoos, porters, guides, taxi operators and vendors. Once verified, service providers receive a unique QR code linked to their credentials.
The system allows pilgrims, tourists and security personnel to instantly verify the identity of a service provider through a simple scan, eliminating uncertainty and reducing the possibility of unauthorised persons operating in sensitive areas.
Officials describe the initiative as a major step toward creating a secure and transparent ecosystem around the Yatra.
“Every verified service provider becomes part of a digital database that can be accessed and authenticated in real time,” a police official said. “It helps distinguish genuine workers from those attempting to operate without authorisation.”
Beyond security, the initiative is expected to improve the overall pilgrimage experience. By maintaining verified records of service providers, authorities hope to minimise disputes, discourage overcharging and ensure greater accountability among those offering services along the route.
Security preparations for this year’s Yatra are among the most extensive witnessed in recent years. Authorities have strengthened surveillance networks, increased ground deployments and expanded technological monitoring systems across key locations.
Senior Superintendent of Police Anantnag, Amod Ashok Nagpure, said all service providers associated with the Yatra have undergone verification through the application and have been issued QR-enabled identification. He said the objective is not only to secure the pilgrimage but also to build trust among visitors arriving from different parts of the country.
In addition to the Pahchan App, authorities have enhanced CCTV coverage, established strategic observation points, strengthened monitoring systems and introduced advanced technologies to assist security personnel in maintaining situational awareness throughout the pilgrimage period.
For many local stakeholders, the initiative represents a new era of digital governance in public security. Service providers who have completed the verification process believe the system will help establish credibility while protecting the livelihoods of genuine workers.
