New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday once again trained his guns at the Election Commission of India, saying the elections were rigged in India and that Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister with a very slim majority.

While speaking at the Annual Legal Conclave-2025 organised by the party’s Law, Human Rights and RTI department, Rahul Gandhi once again targeted the poll body and said, “I’ve been speaking recently about the election system. I always had a suspicion that there was something wrong. Right from 2014…

“I had a suspicion that something that doesn’t add up. In fact, I had a suspicion in the Gujarat Assembly elections already. This ability to win sweeping victories. Congress Party doesn’t get a single seat in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat—this was surprising to me... and it went on for some time. And I could never speak as there was no proof.”

He also mentioned that whenever they spoke, people asked: where is the proof?

“Then, something happened in Maharashtra. Where in the Lok Sabha, we won the election hands down. And then four months later, we didn’t just lose—we were obliterated. Three formidable parties suddenly just evaporated,” the Gandhi scion said.

He also said that’s when he thought this cannot be. “We started to look seriously for electoral malpractice. We found it in Maharashtra, clearly. One crore new voters show up between Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha. Bulk of those votes go to the BJP... but still we didn’t have the clear proof. When I used to mention this to allies that this is clear cheating, my allies would say: yes, the cheating happened, but we don’t have proof,” he said.

“Now I say with absolutely no doubt that we have proof,” the former Congress chief declared.

Making another big allegation of elections being rigged, Rahul Gandhi said, “The truth is that the election system in India is already dead. Please remember one thing—that the Prime Minister of India is the Prime Minister of India with a very slim majority... If 10 to 15 seats were rigged—and we suspect actually the number is much closer to 70 or 80 or 100—if 15 seats were rigged, he would not have been the Prime Minister of India.”

“And we are going to prove to you in the coming few days, without any doubt, how a Lok Sabha election can be rigged and was rigged... It’s very clear that the Constitution that holds it, protects it, defends it has been obliterated and taken over,” he added.

Rahul Gandhi has been in recent months targeting the poll panel over the alleged rigging in last year’s Lok Sabha as well as assembly polls in several states.

During the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi had also issued a stern warning to the Election Commission saying that it will come for the officials from top to bottom—even if they are retired.

Rahul Gandhi started alleging the addition of fake voters in Maharashtra assembly polls last year. He alleged that a Himachal Pradesh population was added in Maharashtra after the 2024 Lok Sabha to 2024 Assembly polls in the state.

He even recently alleged that in Karnataka during the Lok Sabha polls, the party found the addition of fake voters in one of the Parliamentary constituencies.

In the last few days, Rahul Gandhi has intensified his criticism of the Commission over the addition of fake voters in Maharashtra and other states, warning that the same model of rigging will be seen in Bihar too.

However, soon after the Commission began the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls in Bihar, the Congress leader slammed the poll panel over the same.

Rahul Gandhi has also questioned the poll panel for changing the rule to provide the video footage of the polling.

The Election Commission had responded to Rahul Gandhi’s allegations as “deplorable” and asked its officials to continue working impartially and transparently despite threats.
