In the wake of a personal tragedy, the fight for women’s dignity has become a call to challenge how society views, raises and defines girls. For Navnidhi Sharma, the death of his daughter Twisha turned grief and helplessness into a larger fight, not only to seek justice for his daughter, but also for a society where girls are seen as human beings rather than objects or defined solely by marriage and family roles. Speaking at the We Women Want Conclave, organised by NewsX, Sharma urged society to rethink the way it views and raises women.
Sharma said that Twisha allegedly faced atrocities at the hands of her in-laws after marriage, an experience that forced him to confront the expectations placed on women once they are married. He points out that marriage should neither be treated as an achievement nor imposed on daughters as an obligation. “Marrying should not be an accomplishment. Let them live their lives,” he said. Recalling the moment he saw his daughter after her death, Sharma said the sight gave him the strength to seek justice. “The energy in me to fight for my daughter was channeled when I first saw my dead daughter in the mortuary. The energy was given by her,” he said.
