Srinagar: In a major political development ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Tariq Hamid Karra has called an emergency meeting of Congress legislators to discuss the National Conference’s proposal for a joint meeting of alliance partners.
The meeting is scheduled for 4:30 PM at the Congress headquarters in Srinagar and will be attended by all sitting MLAs of the party. The move comes after National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah invited alliance partners for a joint strategy session aimed at finalizing the approach for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections and the forthcoming session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Sources said Karra is expected to gather the opinions of party legislators before consulting the Congress high command on the way forward. “The Congress leadership wants to ensure that all voices within the party are heard before taking a formal position on the NC’s invitation,” a senior party leader said.
While both NC and Congress are alliance partners in the ruling coalition, sources indicate that there have been differences over seat-sharing and coordination strategies, especially in the context of the Rajya Sabha elections. The upcoming meeting could play a crucial role in bridging those gaps or outlining a common agenda.
Farooq Abdullah’s outreach is seen as part of a broader effort to consolidate the alliance and avoid vote splitting during the RS polls. The joint session is also likely to deliberate on opposition strategies, legislative coordination, and possible outreach to other smaller regional parties.
With the political temperature rising and stakes high for both parties, today’s meetings could set the tone for the alliance's cohesion and preparedness ahead of crucial electoral battles.
