As political parties in Uttar Pradesh begin gearing up for the crucial 2027 Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress have also initiated discussions on their electoral strategy. Sources indicate that both parties are working towards developing a framework that places electoral viability above political symbolism. Political observers, however, believe that the success of the SP-Congress alliance will largely depend on maintaining a cohesive and disciplined partnership. According to analysts, only a virtually water-tight alliance between the two parties can pose a serious challenge to the BJP-led saffron camp in the state.
The SP leadership is reportedly prioritising electoral viability and caste-social dynamics while evaluating both constituencies and prospective candidates. As per sources in the Samajwadi Party, initial discussions on seat-sharing with the Congress have already taken place, with “winnability” emerging as the key criterion for deciding which party will contest a particular constituency.
A senior SP leader told The Sunday Guardian that the party has already commenced groundwork for the Assembly elections and is determined not to repeat the mistakes made during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
“The leadership believes that flawed ticket distribution in certain constituencies during the Lok Sabha elections cost the INDIA bloc several seats in Uttar Pradesh. This time, every constituency will be evaluated solely on the basis of which candidate is best positioned to defeat the BJP,” the source said.
Under the proposed arrangement, Congress will be expected to present a detailed assessment of the constituencies it wishes to contest. This will include the party’s past electoral performance, organisational strength, caste and social dynamics in the region, and the profile and viability of its proposed candidate. Sources said the SP leadership will carefully evaluate whether a Congress nominee is genuinely capable of defeating the BJP in a given constituency. In cases where the Samajwadi Party also has a strong contender for the same seat, both candidates will be assessed on the basis of their electoral strength before a final decision is made.
“The objective is not merely to divide seats under an alliance formula. The sole objective is to defeat the BJP. Whoever is in the strongest position to win will be given the ticket,” a source familiar with the discussions said.
According to SP insiders, the party is willing to concede seats to Congress in constituencies where the latter enjoys a strong support base or a more favourable social coalition. However, all such decisions will be backed by electoral data and ground-level assessments rather than political considerations alone.
Simultaneously, the party has launched a major organisational exercise aimed at preventing internal sabotage and factionalism—issues that have affected several political parties during previous elections. SP sources said the leadership has revised its candidate-selection strategy and plans to finalise candidates well before the election schedule is announced. The move is intended to provide candidates adequate time for constituency-level outreach and preparation while reducing internal dissent and last-minute lobbying.
Moreover, the candidate selection process is being closely supervised by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who is personally reviewing feedback from districts across the state. District presidents and city-level office-bearers are being consulted regularly to provide assessments of local political dynamics and prospective candidates.
Party sources said discussions have already been initiated for every Assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh. The SP has reportedly completed the identification of potential candidates for nearly 200 seats, while the formal shortlisting process is expected to begin soon. Alongside this exercise, discreet background verification of prospective candidates is also being conducted to assess their actual standing in their constituencies and identify any potential liabilities before ticket distribution.
A political analyst told The Sunday Guardian that both parties would need to sustain a “water-tight” alliance if they hope to mount a serious challenge to the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.
“The arithmetic of the alliance may appear favourable, but its success will ultimately depend on coordination, candidate selection and the ability of both parties to avoid internal contradictions. If the alliance remains united and continues to prioritise winnability, it could emerge as a formidable challenger to the BJP in Uttar Pradesh,” the analyst said.
