Srinagar: In a concerted security effort, Srinagar Police on Tuesday carried out multiple cordon-and-search operations (CASOs) and surprise frisking drives at key crowded locations throughout the Lal Chowk area and its surroundings. The intensified action comes amid recent threat alerts and is aimed at safeguarding the city’s commercial hub.
Police teams set up temporary checkpoints on major roads including Residency Road and Amira Kadal, stopping vehicles randomly and verifying identity documents. Officers also frisked pedestrians and carried out searches of suspicious packages and unattended bags. According to officials, the exercise sought to maintain enhanced vigilance and ensure public safety in anticipation of any untoward incidents.
“Given the evolving threat environment, we have escalated our alert levels. These surprise checks are meant to act as a deterrent and reassure the public,” a senior police officer said.
The operation was supported by deployment of additional personnel, including rapid response units, dog squads and mobile surveillance vans equipped with CCTV monitoring. Key commercial centres and market areas remained under tight scrutiny throughout the day. Shopkeepers in the Lal Chowk precinct confirmed the presence of armed police patrols and frisking points at all entry routes.
Businesses reported minimal disruption, with normal trade continuing despite the security deployment. “The police are doing their job. The presence gives a sense of safety even though we are carrying on our routine,” remarked one shopkeeper.
Authorities emphasized that the operation will persist until the threat level is assessed as under control. Local residents and visitors were urged to cooperate with security checks, preserve caution and promptly report any suspicious activity.
“The key message is one of readiness day, night or festival. We will not compromise when it comes to the safety of the people of Srinagar,” the officer added.
As Srinagar remains under heightened alert, citizens are reminded that the safety infrastructure is scaled up and they play a vital role in supporting these preventive efforts.
