The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who had been lodged in Nabha Jail since his arrest in June last year in a disproportionate assets case investigated by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau. The bail has triggered a stir in political corridors, with the development expected to influence the state’s political discourse.

Majithia, brother in law of former Punjab chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, was represented by senior advocate Gaurav Aggarwal, who informed the court about a serious threat to the leader’s life. The counsel cited a state intelligence report dated January 3 that allegedly acknowledged the existence of the threat.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta accepted the submissions and allowed the bail plea, permitting Majithia to be released from custody while the investigation continues.

The order marks a key development in the high profile case, in which a detailed chargesheet has been filed and several arrests have already been made.

The decision came hours after Gurinder Singh Dhillon, head of the Radha Soami Satsang Beas, met Majithia at Nabha Jail and expressed support for the Akali leader. Dhillon stated that the case against Majithia was “false and baseless,” adding a fresh political dimension to the ongoing legal battle.
