SRINAGAR: Security forces on Saturday carried out a controlled explosion to neutralise a suspicious object discovered near the banks of Srinagar’s Dal Lake, one of the city’s busiest tourist destinations.
Officials confirmed that during routine surveillance and cleaning operations along the lakefront, security personnel spotted a white, ball-like object lying unattended near the pedestrian stretch. Given the sensitive nature of the area, police quickly cordoned off the surroundings, evacuating locals and tourists as a precautionary measure.
The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was immediately deployed. After a brief examination of the object, a controlled explosion was executed at the site to ensure there was no threat to public safety. The operation concluded without any injuries or property damage.
Sources said that the suspicious item was possibly a remnant from previous military operations or an abandoned object left in the open. However, police have launched a full investigation to ascertain the exact nature, composition, and possible origin of the object.
“An investigation has been taken up, and forensic teams will also examine the remnants of the item,” a senior police officer said.
The incident occurred in a high-footfall area frequented by both locals and tourists, raising temporary concerns. However, authorities assured the public that there is no immediate threat and that all safety protocols were followed strictly.
This comes amid heightened security alerts in parts of the Kashmir Valley, following recent intelligence inputs about potential sabotage attempts by anti-national elements.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or activities. Surveillance in sensitive zones, especially in tourist-heavy areas like Dal Lake, has been further intensified.
