The new face of Kashmir: Calm streets and national pride

Published by Ashiq Mir

Srinagar: Since the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, Jammu and Kashmir has undergone a profound transformation. Once a region marred by conflict and unrest, it now witnesses a resurgence of peace, national pride, and developmental aspirations.

The valley, previously known for frequent stone-pelting incidents and separatist sentiments, has seen a remarkable decline in such activities. A significant change is seen on the ground over the last few years. This change reflects a broader shift in public sentiment, with many embracing the national flag and participating in patriotic campaigns like ‘Har Ghar Tiranga'. Kashmiri youth, once caught in the crossfire of conflict, are now focusing on education and skill development.

Initiatives like Mission Youth aim to empower young individuals with the tools needed for a brighter future.

The emphasis on quality education and global competitiveness marks a significant departure from the disruptions of the past.

The region has witnessed substantial infrastructural development, including the inauguration of a $5-billion rail link connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India. Such projects not only boost economic growth but also symbolize the integration of Kashmir into the national mainstream.

Today, cities like Srinagar, once under the shadow of curfews and shutdowns, bustle with life. Markets remain open, streets are crowded, and the fear that once gripped the populace has significantly diminished. The transformation from a conflict zone to a region of peace and progress is evident in the daily lives of its residents.

The journey of Jammu and Kashmir post-2019 illustrates the power of policy and perseverance in bringing about positive change. While challenges remain, the strides made in fostering peace, patriotism, and development signal a hopeful future for the region.

Kashmir is undergoing a transformative phase as long-cherished dreams of the people are finally being fulfilled. For decades, basic infrastructure projects remained stagnant due to unrest and administrative delays. But now, massive developmental initiatives are reshaping the Valley, offering a new era of connectivity, growth, and modern living. From high-quality road constructions, modern flyovers, and widened highways to newly laid railway tracks connecting the remote stretches of Kashmir with the rest of the country the region is witnessing rapid change.

Locals say that these changes were unimaginable a few years ago. “We once believed development was a distant dream. Today, tunnels are being built through mountains, trains are reaching our doorsteps, and roads are no longer craters of dust,” said Tousef Raina, a resident of North Kashmir.

The pace of work and the political will backing it are being seen as historic. For a region that has faced decades of conflict and neglect, the focus on development has brought hope and opportunity.

Kashmiris are not just witnessing change they are living it.
