NEW DELHI: On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Saturday the Indian Railways marked a historic milestone by deploying an all-women crew to operate the Vande Bharat Express for the first time in the country’s history. This significant initiative was undertaken by the Central Railways, which has taken the remarkable step of running a Vande Bharat Express with an all-women crew for the first time.
The Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22223), departing from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and heading toward Shirdi, is being entirely managed by women. The crew includes the loco pilot, assistant loco pilot, train manager, ticket collectors, and train hostesses, making it a truly momentous occasion.

During an interaction with the media, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railways highlighted that a similar initiative has been introduced in freight trains as well. He further emphasised their commitment to extending this effort to other Vande Bharat trains in the future. Swapnil Nila, the CPRO of Central Railways, stated, “Indian Railways has consistently strived to make conditions more favourable for women. In line with this commitment, on International Women’s Day, the CSMT-Shirdi Vande Bharat Express is being operated by an all-women crew, including the loco pilot, assistant loco pilot, train manager, ticket examiners, and train hostesses. Additionally, a goods train operated by Central Railways is also being managed by an all-women team. We aim to continue this initiative on other Vande Bharat trains as well.”

Taking to social media platform X, Central Railways shared the achievement, calling it a “proud and historic moment” and celebrating the strength, dedication, and leadership of women in the Indian Railways. Their post read: “HISTORIC MOMENT! For the first time, a Vande Bharat Express is being fully operated by an all-women crew, departing from CSMT on this #InternationalWomensDay!
