Assam: A 28-year-old woman, a mother of two, along with her alleged boyfriend, has been arrested in Assam’s Cachar district for allegedly killing her husband by using a high dose of sleeping pills, police sources have revealed.
The husband, identified as Imran Hossain Barbhuiya (38), had recently won the Gaon Panchayat election and became the president of Rajnagar-Khulichhara GP in the South Dhalai area of Cachar. He died on August 11, and the family initially claimed he had suffered a cardiac arrest, officials said.
Imran’s brother, Najib Barbhuiya, lodged the FIR at Dholai Police Station, and a case was registered under Section 103 (murder), 111 (prevention and punishment of organised crime), 25 (performing the act with no intention to cause death or serious injury), and 61 (2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The arrested persons have been identified as 28-year-old Rina Begum (the wife) and Bashiruzzaman Laskar alias Biju (33), who was working as Imran’s personal driver. According to Najib, Rina Begum was involved in an affair with Bashiruzzaman for a long time, and they killed Imran by mixing a heavy dose of sleeping pills in his food on the night of August 11.
Along with two close friends, Rahul Ahmed Laskar and Bachan Laskar, Najib began a secret inquiry. It was then that Rina and Biju’s WhatsApp chats came to light.
Police said they initially detained Rina, Biju, and three other family members of Rina for interrogation.
However, police said they arrested Rina and Biju based on the evidence and statements recorded during the investigation without sharing further information. For further investigation, Imran’s body was exhumed on Thursday evening.
The incident triggered widespread anger in the area. Locals thrashed Biju, Imran’s father-in-law, brother-in-law, and a sister-in-law, and vandalised their vehicle before they were detained by the police earlier this week.
