PM Modi’s Independence Day announcements are expected to shape the BJP’s campaign across five poll-bound states.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set the election agenda for the upcoming polls in five states from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Although the government remained relatively quiet during the Monsoon Session, PM Modi sent a clear message to the opposition on Saturday, signaling his readiness to champion the causes of the ‘Nari Shakti Adhiniyam’ (Women’s Empowerment Act) and Gen Z outside Parliament. This implies that 33% reservation for women and issues appealing to the youth will be central to the election campaigns in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur; development will also remain a key issue. Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has already begun sharpening the Hindutva narrative.
Consequently, the BJP appears to be operating on a dual track: state units will intensify the politics of polarization, while PM Modi and the central team will focus on wooing women and the youth. Recent events have made the elections in these five states crucial for the BJP. In the past, PM Modi used the Red Fort platform to highlight issues like infiltration and changing demographics, turning them into major talking points for elections ranging from Bihar to Bengal; the opposition, by opposing measures against infiltration, became entangled in the politics of Muslim appeasement, allowing the BJP to secure record victories by playing the Hindutva card.
However, the issue of exam paper leaks dampened the victory celebrations, as the ensuing protests put the Modi government on the defensive. PM Modi is well aware that the only way to effectively counter the opposition is by winning the elections in all these states, including Uttar Pradesh. While PM Modi’s personal popularity has not seen a significant decline, the BJP takes every challenge seriously; development will be discussed, but polarization and Hindutva will undoubtedly remain key issues. Other issues will also be advanced alongside these. Efforts to woo the youth and women began on Saturday from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Initiatives such as free coaching and AI training for ten million (one crore) young people are set to make an impact in both rural and urban areas.
Free coaching will significantly benefit ‘Gen Z,’ as many students struggle due to a lack of such facilities. Furthermore, by highlighting the ‘Nari Shakti’ (Women’s Power) Bill, PM Modi not only sent a powerful message to women but also cornered the opposition in a major political maneuver. It appears that PM Modi raised the issue of women’s reservation after careful deliberation. Although the Women’s Reservation Act (2023) has been enacted, the actual implementation hinges on the delimitation process. PM Modi’s recent appeal makes it clear that the government is determined to pass the delimitation amendment bill at any cost. The point of interest now is whether the government will pass the bill before or after the elections in five states.
