Devotees would often come to Sri Ramakrishna to get their spiritual doubts cleared. One of the most discussed topics was the behavior of spiritually illumined souls. The devotees would remark that it was impossible to form any opinion about the behavior of spiritually enlightened souls. Their behaviour often seemed baffling. Sri Ramakrishna would express total agreement with them. He himself used to refer to an extraordinary knower of Brahman who once visited the Dakshineswar temple. His behaviour was simply astounding. He barely had any cloth on his body. He went and sat amidst the dogs and started eating from the leftovers of the people and he also drank handfuls of water from the drainage. To explain the nature of such illumined souls Sri Ramakrishna would draw inference from an analogy. A man once drank a glass of wine in the morning and started talking incoherently. It appeared that a single glass of liquor had made him completely drunk. People were surprised to see him behaving that way after just one drink. They expressed the opinion that perhaps the man had newly picked up the habit of drinking and that is why he was drunk after consuming such a small quantity of liquor. But an onlooker who knew the truth whispered that the man had actually been drinking through the entire night and that is why he was so intoxicated. Similarly, it is very difficult to understand the nature of spiritually illumined souls. People might just see their strange behaviour and come to wrong conclusions. Their depth of realization might have been the result of intense Sadhana, perhaps not only in this life, but also in their previous lives. Only by living in the company of such people for a long time one may get some idea about their Sadhana and the resultant realization. Such a holy company will also inspire others to practice spiritual disciplines intensely.
