“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” — Genesis 1:27 There are truths so fundamental that we sometimes forget their extraordinary significance. Genesis 1:27 gives us one of the Bible’s most profound statements about human identity: every human being is created in the image of God. Before we achieve anything, we have dignity. Before society gives us status, God has given us worth. Our value does not ultimately depend upon wealth, education, profession, appearance, caste, community, success or social influence. Our deepest identity comes from our Creator. This truth is desperately needed today. We live in a world where people are often measured by what they possess, accomplish or contribute. Those who succeed may be celebrated, while those who are weak, poor, elderly, disabled or forgotten can easily become invisible. But Genesis reminds us that every person bears God’s image.
Men and women alike carry this God-given dignity. Therefore, no human being should be treated merely as a means to an end. To despise, exploit or dehumanise another person is to disregard someone whom God himself has created and honoured. Yet Scripture also tells us that sin has distorted the image of God in humanity. We see this distortion in violence, hatred, injustice, greed and division. Humanity needs more than technological progress or social reform; we need transformation of the heart. For Christians, that transformation is found in Jesus Christ. Christ is the perfect revelation of God and the true picture of what humanity is meant to be. In him, power becomes service, greatness becomes humility, truth is joined with love, and forgiveness overcomes hatred. To follow Christ, therefore, is to learn to see others differently. The stranger, neighbour, colleague, opponent and forgotten person are not merely categories. Each is a person created in God’s image.
