Approved before God: Christianity

Whose approval shapes our lives? We may seek recognition from family, appreciation at work, or admiration on social media. These desires are understandable. Yet when pleasing others becomes our highest aim, we can lose the courage to do what is right.

Paul offers Timothy a different compass: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved” (2 Timothy 2:15). The question is not simply whether people applaud us, but whether our lives are faithful before God.

This does not mean earning God’s love through religious performance. We are saved by grace through faith, not by our achievements (Ephesians 2:8–10). Good works are the fruit of that grace, not its price. Because Christ has welcomed us, we can live honestly, without constantly defending our worth.

Paul connects God’s approval with handling the word of truth rightly. Scripture is not a weapon for winning arguments or humiliating neighbours. We must listen carefully, understand faithfully, and allow God’s word to examine us before applying it to others.

Such faithfulness takes visible form in ordinary life. It means refusing a dishonest payment, keeping a promise when nobody checks, speaking truth without cruelty, and treating those who cannot repay us with dignity. At home, it may begin with listening patiently or asking forgiveness.

God’s approval does not require public importance. The unnoticed act of kindness, the prayer offered through tears, and the quiet refusal to compromise all belong to a life turned towards him.

Where we have failed, we need not hide. We can confess, receive Christ’s forgiveness, and begin again. Grace restores us to faithful living. His Spirit strengthens us for obedience when our own courage fails.

This Sunday, let us ask: Am I living for applause, or faithfully before God?

May our prayer be simple: Lord Jesus, free me from the fear of people’s opinions. Teach me to love your truth, serve my neighbour, and walk humbly in your presence. Amen.
