Christianity: Humanity is family of Creator God

Published by Rev. Dr. Richard Howell

At the heart of faith lies a simple and demanding truth: humanity is one family, created by one God. The opening testimony of the Bible makes this clear: “So God created humankind in his image” (Genesis 1:27). Not some people, not a chosen few, but all humanity. Our shared origin in God establishes a shared dignity that no culture, border, or belief can erase.

Scripture affirms that God is the Creator of every people and nation. Paul declares, “From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth” (Acts 17:26). This means our differences are not signs of separation but expressions of a common beginning. Race, language, caste, and nationality do not divide God’s family; human pride does.

Because we belong to one family, Scripture insists on responsibility toward one another. The command is direct: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). Jesus deepens this teaching when he tells the parable of the Good Samaritan, showing that neighbourliness crosses religious and social boundaries (Luke 10:33–37). In God’s family, compassion is not optional; it is the mark of true faith.

The New Testament makes this vision even clearer. Paul reminds the early church, “There is no longer Jew or Greek… for all of you are one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). Unity does not erase difference, but it places difference within a larger belonging. We remain many, yet we are one.

This truth challenges indifference and exclusion. “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26). Hunger, violence, and injustice anywhere in the world concern the whole human family. Faith that ignores suffering betrays its own confession.

To live as one family of the Creator God is to practise mercy, seek justice, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8). In a divided world, this calling is difficult, yet it is hopeful. If God is our Creator, then reconciliation is possible, and living together as one family is not a dream, but a divine mandate.
