Christianity: I have put my words in your mouth

In a noisy and divided world, Jeremiah 1:9 reminds us that renewal begins not with louder voices but with touched hearts and transformed speech. When God stretched out His hand to touch Jeremiah’s mouth, He gave a frightened young man a sacred trust: words that carried both truth and tenderness. This divine gesture still speaks today. It tells us that speech, when guided by love and integrity, can heal rather than harm, build rather than break. God’s act of touching the mouth shows that transformation begins at the point of our weakness. Like Jeremiah, we often protest, “I am not ready,” yet God answers with presence, not pressure. His word is not a script to repeat but a life to embody. Every generation needs such consecrated voices—people whose words echo justice, mercy, and hope. The call extends beyond pulpits. Parents at the dinner table, teachers in classrooms, leaders in public life, and citizens online—all shape the moral climate through their words. A society becomes humane when truth is spoken with humility and disagreements handled without destruction. Our speech, too often polluted by anger or deceit, needs the purifying touch of grace. To live Jeremiah 1:9 today is to let divine wisdom govern our communication. It invites us to practise gratitude instead of complaint, confession instead of accusation, and listening before responding. God’s word, once received, calls us to uproot lies and plant peace, to replace cynicism with compassion and despair with imagination. May our homes, workplaces, and digital platforms become spaces where words carry healing power. For when the Eternal places His word within us, every conversation can become an act of creation—truth that humbles, courage that loves, and hope that rebuilds the world.
