CHRISTIANITY: India is a free country

Published by Rev. Dr. Richard Howell

Seventy-nine years ago, on August 15, 1947, the Tricolour rose high over a free India. Chains of colonial rule were broken, and a nation of ancient civilisations stepped into self-governance. Today, we rejoice that India is a free country. Yet freedom is more than the absence of foreign rule; it is the presence of justice, truth, and responsibility.

The Bible reminds us that freedom is a divine gift, but also a sacred trust. Freedom as a gift from God. The apostle Paul writes that true freedom begins in the soul. A nation may win independence through the courage of its people, but it is God who gives the ultimate freedom the freedom from sin and fear. Just as people stood on the banks of the Red Sea after being delivered from Egypt (Exod. 15:1–2), so too India’s story is one of God’s providence.

In the struggles of our leaders, in the prayers of saints, and in the sacrifices of ordinary citizens, we see God’s hand guiding history. Freedom and responsibility, Galatians 5:13 says, “Do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” National freedom calls us not to selfishness, but to service.

As citizens of India, we are called to uphold the dignity of every person regardless of caste, creed, or gender and to speak against injustice. Independence is not a license for corruption or division, but a mandate for unity, honesty, and compassion. Living as free people. In Christ, we are set free to live righteously. Let our patriotism not be in empty slogans, but in honest work, care for the poor, respect for law, and prayer for leaders (1 Tim. 2:1–2). A free India must also be a moral India. When we walk in integrity, we preserve the soul of the nation. India is a free country let us keep it free, so that justice, peace, and love may flow like rivers across our land.
