Christianity: Love that learns

St Paul’s prayer in Philippians 1:9 is both simple and demanding: “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment.” He does not merely ask that believers should love. He prays that their love should grow, deepen, and become wise.

That matters because Christian love is not sentimental softness. It is not blind approval. It is not mere emotion. Love, in the New Testament, is formed by truth and guided by discernment. Paul wants the church to be marked by affection that is intelligent, faithful, and morally clear.

We live in an age that often separates love from truth. One side speaks of compassion without moral seriousness. Another speaks of truth without tenderness. Paul refuses both distinctions. He joins love, knowledge, and discernment in one prayer. The Christian life requires a warm heart and a wise mind. To abound in love means that we do not remain shallow people. We grow in patience, kindness, forgiveness, and service. We learn to bear with others. We become less harsh in judgment and less narrow in spirit. But this growing love must also be shaped by knowledge of God’s will. It must learn what is right, what is holy, and what truly serves another person’s good. Discernment is especially needed in a confused age. Not everything that appears loving is good. Not everything that feels right is right. The believer must ask: does this reflect the character of Christ? Does this honour truth? Does this build up the other? This Pauline prayer remains urgent for the church, for families, and for public life. We need not only strong convictions, but sanctified affections. We need not only religious language, but mature Christian character. So this Sunday, let us pray Paul’s prayer for ourselves: Lord, enlarge our love. Instruct our minds. Sharpen our discernment. Make us people whose love is deep, truthful, and Christlike.
