Christianity: Serenity through trials

Life often tests us with trials—moments of confusion, pain, and uncertainty. Our instinct is to resist, to struggle, to grasp for control. Yet Scripture reminds us that when we walk through trials with serenity—a deep trust in God—we find ourselves led into true tranquility.

Consider the example of Daniel in the lions’ den (Daniel 6). Daniel’s trial was not small: a decree had been issued that anyone who prayed to anyone but the king would be thrown into the den of lions. Daniel did not panic, nor did he compromise his faith. Instead, he prayed, as was his custom, three times a day, giving thanks to God. His serenity was not a denial of danger, but confidence in God’s sovereignty. When he was cast into the den, he spent the night surrounded by lions, yet in perfect tranquility, because the angel of the Lord shut their mouths.

Daniel’s serenity in the face of mortal trial reveals the secret of tranquility: it is not found in escape from suffering, but in trust that God is greater than suffering. As Paul reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7).

Our trials today may not be dens of lions, but they are real: illness, injustice, loneliness, or doubt. If we meet them with panic, we sink deeper into turmoil. But if we meet them with serenity—anchored in prayer, thanksgiving, and faith—we discover a tranquility this world cannot give.

Serenity is not passivity. It is active surrender—entrusting the outcome to God, while remaining faithful in prayer and witness. When serenity anchors our souls, trials no longer define us; they refine us. And tranquillity, the peace of Christ, becomes our reward.

Let us pray for serenity in trials, trusting that God will lead us into His tranquillity.
