Christianity: The King who comes in humility

Palm Sunday begins with joy, but it moves toward the cross. The crowds welcome Jesus with branches, praise, and expectation. They cry, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord” (Luke 19:38). They are right to rejoice, because the King has come. But they do not yet understand the kind of King He is. Jesus enters Jerusalem not on a war horse, but on a colt. He comes in humility, not in worldly power. He does not come to crush Rome by force. He comes to conquer sin, death, pride, and evil through obedience to the Father. His kingdom is real, but it does not advance by violence, spectacle, or domination. It comes through truth, righteousness, sacrifice, and peace.

Palm Sunday therefore asks us a searching question: Do we welcome the real Christ, or only the Christ of our expectations? The crowd wanted glory, victory, and public triumph. Jesus came with tears, humility, and the shadow of the cross. Many welcomed Him when He looked like success. Fewer remained when discipleship became costly.

That danger remains with us. We too may want a Christ who solves our problems quickly, defeats our enemies publicly, and confirms our plans. But the Christ who enters Jerusalem calls us to another way. He calls us to follow Him in humility, repentance, and faithfulness. He calls us not only to wave palms, but to take up the cross.

Yet Palm Sunday is still a day of hope. The King has come. He comes gently. He comes righteously. He comes to save. He comes to reign, not by flattering the crowd, but by giving Himself for the world. His road leads through suffering, but beyond suffering lies resurrection.

So let us welcome Him with more than our lips. Let us welcome Him with our hearts, our obedience, and our trust. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.
