When people think about longevity, diet and exercise usually top the list. But a new study suggests there may be one health habit even more strongly linked to how long you live — and it’s something millions of people continue to ignore: sleep.

Researchers found that getting enough quality sleep may predict longevity better than diet and physical activity alone, highlighting how crucial rest is for long-term health and survival, as per ScienceAlert.

Sleep Emerges as a Major Longevity Predictor

The study, conducted by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University, analyzed US survey data collected between 2019 and 2025. Scientists examined life expectancy trends alongside self-reported sleep duration.

Their findings showed that people who consistently slept less than seven hours a night had a significantly stronger association with lower life expectancy — even after accounting for factors like physical inactivity, education, and employment status. According to the researchers, only smoking showed a stronger link to reduced lifespan. 

Why Sleep Matters So Much

Experts say sleep affects nearly every system in the body. Poor sleep has already been linked to conditions such as obesity, diabetes, weakened immunity, cardiovascular disease, and impaired brain function.

The latest findings reinforce the idea that insufficient sleep may quietly increase long-term health risks in ways many people underestimate. 

Study co-author Andrew McHill said the strength of the connection surprised researchers, adding that people should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep whenever possible. 

More Important Than Diet and Exercise?

The study does not claim that exercise and nutrition are unimportant. In fact, both remain essential for healthy aging and disease prevention.

However, researchers found that sleep duration showed a stronger statistical association with life expectancy than many other lifestyle factors, including diet and exercise habits. 

Scientists also noted that sleep may influence how effectively the body recovers, regulates hormones, repairs tissues, and manages inflammation — all critical processes connected to aging.

Experts Recommend at Least Seven Hours

Health experts, including the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society, recommend adults get at least seven hours of sleep per night for optimal health.

Researchers say improving sleep habits may be one of the simplest lifestyle changes people can make to support long-term wellness and potentially increase lifespan. 

Simple Ways to Improve Sleep Quality

Experts suggest several habits that may help improve sleep naturally:

– Maintain a consistent bedtime schedule
– Reduce screen time before bed
– Avoid excessive caffeine late in the day
– Exercise regularly
– Keep bedrooms cool and dark
– Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation

Researchers say even small improvements in sleep consistency may benefit overall health over time.

While exercise and healthy eating remain essential pillars of good health, the latest research suggests sleep deserves equal — if not greater — attention when it comes to longevity.

Scientists say prioritising seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night could play a major role in improving both lifespan and overall well-being.
