49ers vs Los Rams – Trench Warfare: Trent Williams Versus Myles Garrett
The marquee individual battle of the night takes place in the trenches, where future Hall of Fame offensive tackle Trent Williams anchors the San Francisco line against Los Angeles’ newly acquired game-wrecking pass rusher, Myles Garrett.
Garrett brings explosive first-step speed and relentless edge pressure that can single-handedly derail an offensive rhythm, while Williams remains the gold standard of elite pass-blocking technique.
How Kyle Shanahan schemes protection to help neutralize Garrett on crucial third downs will dictate whether San Francisco can move the chains consistently.
Backfield Brilliance: Christian McCaffrey Versus Rams Front Seven
Fully healthy and cleared for action, Christian McCaffrey remains the ultimate offensive engine for the 49ers. His unmatched versatility as both an interior runner and an elite pass catcher out of the backfield forces linebackers and second-level defenders into constant conflict.
The Rams’ front seven must maintain disciplined gap integrity and open-field tackling, because allowing McCaffrey to find daylight on early downs will allow San Francisco to control the game clock and dictate tempo.
Defensive Chess Match: Fred Warner Versus Matthew Stafford
On the defensive side, All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner acts as the ultimate on-field general for San Francisco, tasked with diagnosing the rapid-fire pre-snap reads of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. Stafford relies on pinpoint accuracy and quick processing to target playmakers like Puka Nacua across intermediate zones.
Warner’s ability to disguise coverage drops, shut down middle-of-the-field passing lanes, and limit yards after the catch will be the primary defensive hurdle for the Los Angeles attack.
