IND vs NZ, T20 World Cup 2026: India opening superstar Abhishek Sharma, who was going through a rough patch, made a blockbuster comeback in the ongoing IND vs NZ, T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Abhishek Sharma scripted history as he broke the world record by smashing an outstanding 18-ball half-century in the high-voltage clash.
For the unversed, Abhishek had found himself at the receiving end of criticism and trolling as he was struggling to score runs in the ongoing tournament. In fact, many demanded his exclusion from the team. The stylish opener, who is known for his aggressive batting, played a series of disappointing knocks before finally making a much-needed comeback in the summit clash. He repaid the faith of captain Suryakumar Yadav and head-coach Gautam Gambhir with his explosive knock.
Abhishek Sharma walked out with all guns blazing as he took the Kiwi bowlers to the cleaners and smashed the fastest half-century by any batter in the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup. His knock was laced with 6 fours and 3 sixes.
New Zealand made a risky call by not including specialist off-spinner Cole McConchie in their playing XI. This was surprising because Abhishek had struggled against off-spin earlier in the World Cup. When Glenn Phillips bowled his part-time off-spin, Abhishek looked a bit careful, but New Zealand’s bowling plans still didn’t work.
With his sensational knock, Abhishek Sharma not only went past Jacob Bethell and Finn Allen's 19-ball fifties from the semi-finals but also surpassed the record of his mentor, Yuvraj Singh, who scored a 20-ball fifty against Australia in the 2007 edition of the World Cup.
Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma made history by putting together the first 50-run opening partnership in an ICC Men's T20 World Cup final. The milestone came during India’s title clash against the New Zealand national cricket team in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
The Indian openers attacked from the start and reached their fifty-run stand in just four overs. By then, they had already hit five fours and three sixes.
Earlier, the highest opening partnership in a T20 World Cup final was 48 runs by Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan for the Pakistan national cricket team against the Sri Lanka national cricket team in 2009.
Before this, the best opening stand for India in a final was 25 runs by Gautam Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan against Pakistan in 2007.
Meanwhile, the Master-Blaster, Sachin Tendulkar, took to his official X account and hailed Abhishek Sharma for his terrific knock on the big stage. He wrote, “Not the easiest tournament for Abhishek Sharma, but the team showed belief in his ability. He has repaid that faith with a crucial knock in the final. Well played!”
