The first ODI between Afghanistan and Ireland was abandoned due to persistent rain in Bready on Wednesday, with not a single ball bowled. Despite several inspections and a brief improvement in the weather, the rain returned and eventually forced the officials to call off the match. The result means both teams will have to wait for the second ODI to get their campaign underway.Â
Rain Disrupts Afghanistan vs Ireland First ODI
Rain had been falling since the morning in Bready, leaving the ground covered and delaying the toss. The weather showed little sign of improving during the early part of the day, with officials repeatedly monitoring the conditions.
The first inspection was delayed as the rain continued. At 10:42 local time, Cricket Ireland confirmed that the next inspection would take place at 12 PM.
There was finally some positive news at 11:57 local time when the rain stopped and ground staff began removing the covers. An official inspection was scheduled for noon, raising hopes that play could finally begin.
However, those hopes did not last long. Rain returned at around 12:23 local time, forcing the inspection to be called off. With the conditions failing to improve, the officials eventually abandoned the match.
Afghanistan vs Ireland Head-To-Head Record
Afghanistan and Ireland have faced each other 32 times in ODI cricket before this series. Afghanistan have the upper hand in their head-to-head record, winning 18 matches, while Ireland have secured 13 victories.
Afghanistan entered the series with a strong spin attack and dangerous opening batters. Rashid Khan was among the key players expected to make an impact, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sediqullah Atal were set to provide firepower at the top.
Ireland, meanwhile, were expected to rely on their experienced batting unit and fast bowlers familiar with the conditions in Bready. Paul Stirling, Andrew Balbirnie and Harry Tector were among their key players.
Afghanistan are led by newly appointed Test and ODI captain Rahmat Shah, while Paul Stirling continues to lead Ireland.
With the first ODI washed out, both teams will now turn their attention to the next match, set to be held on August 7, Friday at the same venue, Bready Cricket Club, Bready, Northern Ireland.
