A new defining era has begun in Indian domestic football. In a major breakthrough, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Indian Super League (ISL) franchises have resolved their administrative impasse, announcing a four-year, club-led commercial plan to run the country’s top-tier league.

The breakthrough comes after intense mediation by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. Until now, the domestic system was in serious gridlock after the expiry of the 15-year Master Rights Agreement (MRA) with former commercial partners. The federation initially considered a broad long-term external offer from London-based Genius Sports but the ISL franchises fought back with a collective self-governing offer. Now the body has approved this gradual structural change, trusting in the clubs’ administrative know-how.

Key Financials and Governance Architecture

The ISL’s commercial operations will be completely taken over by a newly created Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the newly created framework. Day to day operations and valuations for broadcast and sponsorship will be run by a highly professional team, independently of the day to day club influence, to be appointed through transparent interviewing panels. But the strategic direction will report directly to a Governing Council that will have direct club ownership and director level representation.

The proforma 4 year financial model contains a graduated participation fee structure to ensure the financial sustainability of the governing body’s regulatory functions:

Year 1: Each club will contribute ₹1.1 crore, netting the AIFF a guaranteed upfront total of ₹15.4 crore across 14 competing teams.
Year 2: Participation fee scales up to ₹1.15 crore per franchise.
Year 3: Participation fee scales up to ₹1.20 crore per franchise.
Year 4: Participation fee scales up to ₹1.25 crore per franchise.

The 10% Profit Sharing Clause

Besides the assured annual management fees, the AIFF has locked in a substantial 10% share of the net profits generated by the SPV. Importantly, the national body remains the absolute custodian of the game, with full responsibility for refereeing, judicial legality, integrity protocols, and anti-doping systems.

Crucial Safeguards and Promotion-Relegation Kept Intact

The roadmap covers major sporting rules and affirms that the mandatory promotion and relegation system will remain in place without interruption. To safeguard clubs from longer-term risks, there is a protective termination clause that allows teams the flexibility to assess and potentially exit the model after two seasons with appropriate notice.

“The right choice for us to make is to trust our clubs because they are one of our biggest stakeholders,” stated AIFF Deputy General Secretary M. Satyanarayan, encapsulating a monumental compromise that ensures the commercial stability and structural continuity of Indian football.
