The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is gearing up for a major revamp as the term of Ajit Agarkar as the chairman of the senior selection committee is nearing its end, reports suggest. The developments come at a time when there is a rising debate around Rohit Sharma’s future in India’s ODI setup and the long-term planning of the team heading into the 2027 ODI World Cup.
According to NDTV Sports, Agarkar’s position is under pressure, with former India batter and current National Cricket Academy head VVS Laxman emerging as a leading candidate if the BCCI decides to make a change in the selection panel. While no official confirmation has been issued by the board, the reports suggest discussions regarding the future structure of India’s selection committee are underway.
Agarkar’s original term as chief selector ended in June 2026, after which he was handed a three-month extension by the BCCI. It was widely expected that the former India pacer would continue in the role until the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, recent developments have reportedly complicated that possibility.
The biggest talking point has been Rohit Sharma’s place in India’s ODI plans. As reported by NDTV Sports, citing Dainik Jagran, the Agarkar-led selection committee had discussions with the Gautam Gambhir-led team management regarding the possibility of moving on from Rohit in future ODI assignments. Reports also suggested the ODI series against England could be the veteran batter’s last appearances in the format.
However, the narrative changed dramatically when Rohit responded with a brilliant century in the third ODI at Lord’s, a match that had been widely speculated to be his farewell game. His match-winning innings didn’t just put the retirement talk on hold for now, it also made the reported plans of the selectors a lot more complicated.
Shortly thereafter, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that Rohit is a regular member of India’s ODI side and will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the team’s plans. The statement effectively put an end to immediate retirement speculation and highlighted the differing views that may exist within Indian cricket’s decision-making circles.
Reports have also suggested that some members of the team management favour a gradual transition towards a younger squad ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, though no final call has been taken on Rohit’s future.
Another issue attracting attention is the pending review of India’s recent performances in Ireland and England, where the team suffered eight defeats in ten matches. The BCCI was expected to hold a review meeting after the England tour, but the exercise has reportedly not yet taken place despite the team’s departure for the Sri Lanka Test series.
While the BCCI has remained silent on the matter, speculation around Agarkar’s future and VVS Laxman’s possible elevation is likely to continue until an official decision is announced.
