Alexander Zverev’s US Open 2026 trophy on Sunday gave the German another major title to celebrate, but his victory over Ben Shelton also brought renewed attention to a subject that has followed him throughout his career. During the men’s singles final at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Hall of Fame broadcaster Mary Carillo again raised the domestic abuse allegations involving Zverev on the tournament’s World Feed broadcast, according to tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg. The feed is distributed internationally and is also available through the radios used by spectators inside the stadium.

Zverev went on to beat Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 and claim his first US Open title, adding the New York trophy to the French Open crown he won earlier this year.

What Did Mary Carillo Say About Zverev’s Abuse Allegations?

According to Rothenberg, Carillo once again discussed the allegations against Zverev while the German was playing the US Open final.

Carillo has previously been outspoken about the subject. She stepped away from her presenting role at the 2021 Laver Cup, where Zverev was competing, after objecting to how tennis had handled the allegations.

The renewed discussion during the US Open final was notable because the World Feed reaches an international audience rather than being limited to a single country’s domestic broadcast.

What Are The Domestic Abuse Allegations Against Alexander Zverev?

Zverev has faced domestic abuse allegations from two former partners, Olga Sharypova and Brenda Patea. He has denied the allegations.

Sharypova made allegations of physical and emotional abuse during their relationship. Zverev denied her claims, and the ATP later commissioned an independent investigation.

In January 2023, the ATP announced that it would not impose a sanction on Zverev after its investigation, saying it could not substantiate the allegations.

A separate case involved Patea, the mother of Zverev’s daughter. She accused him of physically abusing her during an incident in Berlin in 2020. Zverev contested the allegations, and the legal proceedings were eventually settled in 2024 without a criminal conviction or an admission of guilt.

Alexander Zverev Wins US Open 2026

The controversy was discussed as Zverev competed for his second Grand Slam title of the season.

The top-seeded German controlled the opening two sets against Shelton before the American fought back to take the third 7-5. Zverev then regained control in the fourth set, breaking Shelton twice to close out the match 6-2.

The victory was particularly notable given Zverev’s history at the US Open. He had previously reached the 2020 final, where he surrendered a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem.

This time, there was no repeat of that collapse. Zverev held his nerve against Shelton to secure his second Grand Slam title of 2026 and his first US Open championship.

Shelton, meanwhile, fell short in his first Grand Slam final after producing one of the tournament’s biggest runs, including a quarterfinal victory over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and a semifinal win over Frances Tiafoe.
