Anthony Elanga Injury Update: Newcastle United FC have been dealt a significant attacking blow after Anthony Elanga was ruled out of the Premier League clash against Leeds United FC at Elland Road. The Sweden international, who had made an explosive start to the 2026/27 campaign, was absent from Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle squad as the Magpies faced a major test on the road. The club boss has now admitted that Elanga’s injury could potentially keep him sidelined for an extended period.
Elanga has been one of Newcastle’s brightest attacking outlets since the arrival of Jaissle, making his absence particularly significant as the German coach looks to maintain momentum during the early weeks of the Premier League season.
Anthony Elanga Injury Update
Jaissle confirmed before kick-off that Elanga is injured and that Newcastle United still need further medical assessments before determining the full extent of the problem.
“We need to investigate further and in more detail to find out how long he will be out,” Jaissle told Sky Sports. The Newcastle manager added that Elanga will undergo another MRI next week, while acknowledging that the injury “could be” long-term.
The update marks a worrying turn after Elanga had recently been in excellent form. The 24-year-old scored in Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Tottenham and had also found the net against Liverpool earlier in the campaign. He was subsequently named the Premier League’s August Guinness Goal of the Month winner, underlining his strong start.
Elanga’s latest setback also comes after he suffered a shin contusion during Newcastle’s pre-season win at Valencia. That earlier injury was initially considered relatively minor, with the winger later able to walk after being stretchered off.
Who Replaced Anthony Elanga In Leeds vs Newcastle?
With Elanga unavailable, Jacob Murphy was handed the starting role against Leeds United on Newcastle’s right side. Murphy’s presence gives Jaissle an experienced option in the position after the club opted to retain him despite Nottingham Forest’s reported £15 million deadline-day interest.
New signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo was also included among Newcastle’s attacking options. The Belgium international had been edging closer to his first Premier League start, with Jaissle previously confirming that he was nearing full match readiness.
Fernandez-Pardo had made his Newcastle debut from the bench against Bournemouth.
When Could Anthony Elanga Return?
There is currently no confirmed return date for Elanga. Newcastle are waiting for the results of another MRI next week before establishing the severity of the injury and setting a recovery timeline.
If the assessment confirms a long-term problem, Elanga could miss Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures and potentially Sweden’s international commitments.
