Anthony Gordon To Barcelona: Can The Former Newcastle Star Replace Raphinha in Hansi Flick’s Starting XI?

Anthony Gordon is set for a new challenge after completing a blockbuster move from Newcastle United to Barcelona. The England star arrives with a reputation for pace, versatility and relentless pressing, qualities that align closely with Hansi Flick's tactical approach. While Raphinha remains one of Barcelona's key attacking players, Gordon's arrival is expected to create competition for a place in the playing XI for the Catalan giants.

With the transfer window yet to open, Barcelona have already started business for the next season. The La Liga champions have signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United to strengthen their attack. The English winger has agreed on a five-year deal, to run until June 30, 2031, for a fee that could rise to 80 million euros ($93 million). Gordon arrives at the Camp Nou following the departure of the legendary Robert Lewandowski.

As Barcelona has yet to confirm the future of Marcus Rashford, it’ll be interesting to see how Hansi Flick uses Gordon in the star-studded attack, already featuring Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Ferran Torres. The Catalan club is expected to add more attacking players to the squad in this summer window, with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez being the top priority after Gordon.

Will Anthony Gordon replace Raphinha in Barcelona’s starting XI?

Gordon, the top scorer for Newcastle United in the 2025-26 season, can play both as a right-winger and a striker. One particular quality that perhaps impressed Barcelona boss Hansi Flick was his tendency to press from the very first minutes. This approach certainly makes him a good fit for the current Barca system.

Now the question is who would be replaced for Gordon if he becomes a starter for the Spanish club in the next season. With Lamine Yamal on the left and Ferran Torres as a striker, Gordon can operate from the right flank, where Raphinha starts.

If the former Newcastle man plays in the middle, Torres has to compromise his place. However, such squad depth will be required for the long season, given how Barcelona have struggled with injury issues of first-team players in recent seasons.

Anthony Gordon Career So Far

He has already played 17 matches for the Three Lions and scored twice. In 2025-26, Gordon made 46 appearances across all competitions, logging 17 goals and five assists.
