The inclusion of 28-year-old goalkeeper Luca Zidane in Vladimir Petković’s Algerian squad has generated huge curiosity throughout the footballing world. How did the son of a French icon find himself between the sticks for the Desert Foxes? The answer is a combination of ancestral heritage, FIFA eligibility rules and a personal desire to build an independent legacy.
The Paternal Ancestral Link
Luca was born in Marseille, but spent most of his childhood in Spain, where his father is a legend at Real Madrid. However, he has always had dual nationality. His paternal grandparents, Smaïl and Malika Zidane, were from the Kabylie region of northern Algeria and immigrated to Paris in the 1950s. For Luca and his three professional footballing brothers this direct lineage provided a real multi-flag dilemma: the opportunity to represent France, Spain or Algeria.
Navigating FIFA’s Regulations
Luca’s native country was highly involved in his formative years. He progressed through the French youth ranks, winning the 2015 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. But according to FIFA’s current rules of eligibility, playing for a country as a youth does not permanently bind the player to that nation.
Having never won a competitive senior cap for the French national team, the door was wide open for a change of allegiance. FIFA approved his official request to change his sporting nationality to Algeria in September 2025. He made his full senior international debut a month later in a 2–1 World Cup qualifying victory over Uganda.
Escaping the Shadow
Beyond the legal side of things, this decision is a huge psychological step for the Granada custodian. For Luca, playing for France would have meant endless, overbearing comparisons to his father’s untouchable legacy. By choosing Algeria he is following the family footsteps but also forging his own international path. Luca, who fully recovered from a fractured jaw in April, is a key figure in the Group J trenches for an ambitious African side.
