In her TIME interview, Sabalenka opened up about the personality behind the fierce competitor. She explained how dancing and creating social media content give her an escape from tennis, allowing her to switch off for short periods. She also spoke about the pressure of online criticism and the importance of maintaining balance.
“I want to be remembered as a fighter on court, but so cool and fun off court,” Sabalenka said.
The four-time Grand Slam champion also reflected on difficult moments in her life, including the loss of former boyfriend Konstantin Koltsov and her father Sergey. She credited tennis with helping her cope during one of the darkest periods of her life.
“Tennis really saved me from depression,” she told TIME.
Sabalenka also discussed player power in tennis and said competitors would stand together if a Grand Slam boycott ever became necessary.
