Australian women’s cricket team vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner has issued a public apology for the pain caused by the breakdown of her marriage, addressing the recent controversy surrounding her relationship with teammate Georgia Voll. Gardner’s statement follows public criticism from her estranged wife, Monica Wright, regarding the handling of the situation by cricketing authorities.

She publicly questioned why Cricket Australia (CA) had not taken disciplinary action or removed Gardner from her leadership position.

How has Cricket Australia responded?
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg confirmed that the organisation was already aware of the relationship before it made headlines. He backed Gardner, stating “Ash is a highly regarded leader in our system. The CA board make leadership decisions and have oversight over all leadership decisions,” as reported by Guardian.
However, to address concerns about potential conflicts of interest, Greenberg announced that CA is implementing new safeguards. These added policies ensure Gardner will be excluded from any decisions, such as player selection, that could present a perceived or real conflict involving Voll.
“Ash is our vice-captain for a reason because she’s highly regarded, but what we will do in situations where there are personal relationships is make sure there are additional guardrails so the perception of conflict or conflict itself – talking about things like selection – is handled appropriately and respectfully.”

Taking to social media, Gardner acknowledged that while her separation is a personal matter, her relationship status needed to be addressed given her position in the team. She thanked the CA Board for supporting her continued leadership and expressed a desire to “look forward to playing a strong role as a leader and providing the best possible support for my teammates in the season to come”.
Gardner also directly apologised for the hurt caused by the situation, stating, “I am grateful for the time Monica and I shared and sorry for the pain this has caused. I wish her nothing but happiness and success in the future.
“I won’t be making any further public comment on this matter at this time and ask that the privacy of those involved is respected.”
