Kumkum Mohod Wins Women’s Individual Recurve Gold at Asian Games 2026

Kumkum Mohod scripted history at the Asian Games 2026 on Saturday, October 3, by winning the women’s individual recurve gold medal. The 17-year-old Indian archer held her nerve in a tense final against South Korea’s Oh Yejin, with the contest eventually decided by a shoot-off after the two archers finished level at 5-5.

With everything coming down to a single arrow, Kumkum produced the perfect response under pressure. Oh could manage an 8 in the shoot-off, while the Indian teenager found the 10-ring to seal the gold. The victory also made Kumkum the first Indian woman to win a medal in the individual recurve event at the Asian Games, going one step further by claiming the title.

Kumkum had already secured a quota place for India at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics by reaching the semifinals. She booked her place in the last four with a 6-2 victory over China’s Jingyi Zhu, winning the contest 28-27, 30-30, 29-29 and 29-28. Earlier in the day, she had defeated reigning world champion and Olympic champion Kang Chaeyoung 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Kumkum Mohod’s Historic Gold Adds to India’s Asian Games Archery Legacy

The individual gold was Kumkum’s third medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games and her second gold of the competition. She had earlier combined with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma to defeat South Korea 5-3 and secure India’s first-ever Asian Games gold in the women’s recurve team event. She then partnered Dhiraj Bommadevara to win silver in the mixed recurve team competition after India lost 3-5 to China on Friday.

Kumkum’s historic victory also adds another chapter to India’s record in Asian Games recurve archery. Before her, Tarundeep Rai’s silver at the 2010 Guangzhou Games was India’s only individual recurve medal at the continental event. Her gold therefore becomes the country’s first women’s individual recurve medal and takes India’s overall medal tally to 77 at the time of writing, including 17 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze.
