India’s Pranavi Urs produced a composed performance under pressure to create history at the Asian Games, becoming the first Indian woman golfer to win an individual gold medal at the continental event. The 23-year-old held on to a narrow one-stroke advantage in the final round, finishing with an impressive 15-under-par total of 265 to secure the title. Her victory marked India’s first Asian Games gold in women’s golf and ended a long wait for another golf gold since Shiv Kapur’s triumph in 2002.
Pranavi’s landmark individual victory also contributed to India’s success in the women’s team event, with the country securing a silver medal. Having stayed in contention throughout the competition, she kept her composure when it mattered most and delivered a decisive final round to finish on top of the individual leaderboard. The gold not only adds another major achievement to Pranavi’s career but also gives India a historic double in the women’s golf competition at the Asian Games.
Pranavi Urs Ends India’s Wait for Historic Asian Games Gold in Women’s Golf
Indian golfer Pranavi Urs etched her name in Asian Games history on Saturday, becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual golf gold at the continental event. The 23-year-old held her nerve through a tense final round at Aichi-Nagoya, finishing with a 15-under-par total of 265 to win by one stroke. Her triumph also ended India’s wait for an Asian Games golf gold since Shiv Kapur’s men’s individual victory in 2002.
Urs entered the final round with a three-stroke advantage after carding a brilliant four-under 66 on Day 3. However, her cushion disappeared quickly when she made a triple bogey on the third hole. Instead of allowing the setback to derail her challenge, Urs responded with three birdies to steady her round and stay in the hunt. She eventually closed with an even-par 70 and held on to the top spot by the narrowest of margins.
Her individual triumph was followed by another historic achievement as Urs helped India secure silver in the women’s team golf event alongside Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar. The Indian trio finished with a combined score of 14-under-par 546, with the two best scores counting towards the team total. China claimed the team gold after finishing at 22-under 538.
Pranavi Urs Leads India to Historic Double in Women’s Golf
Aditi played a key role in India’s team effort with a 67 in the final round, while Diksha carded 77. Urs’ 70 was enough to secure the individual title and also make a significant contribution to India’s team score. The double-medal performance added another landmark chapter to her campaign in Aichi-Nagoya.
The victory is particularly significant for Indian women’s golf, with Aditi Ashok’s silver at the Hangzhou Asian Games previously being the country’s only women’s golf medal at the event. Urs has now gone one step further, becoming India’s first women’s individual golf champion at the Asian Games while also helping the team claim silver. With this, India’s total tally comes to 79 medals with 18 golds, 26 silver, and 35 bronze.
