AUS vs BAN 1st Test Day 1 Highlights: Hasan Mahmud’s Six-Wicket Haul Powers Bangladesh to Dominant Position Against Australia

AUS vs BAN 1st Test Match Highlights: Less than a week after being bowled out for 54 in the warm-up game, Bangladesh national cricket team bounced back in an emphatic fashion to dominate Day 1 of the first Test against Australia national cricket team at Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin. Hasan Mahmud’s career-best 6/55 led a superb pace-bowling display as Bangladesh bowled Australia out for 198 before reaching 96/1 at stumps, marking a dream return to Test cricket in Australia after 23 years.

Apart from Mahmud’s six-wicket haul, Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain also picked up two wickets apiece as Bangladesh’s pace attack claimed all 10 Australian wickets. Veteran batter Steve Smith’s 71 was the only significant resistance from the home team. Meanwhile, Australia’s top order struggled to cope with the visitors’ relentless bowling on the opening day of the AUS vs BAN 1st Test.

Earlier in the day, Australia captain Pat Cummins showed no hesitation in opting to bat first after winning the toss. But Bangladesh’s fast bowlers quickly made the most of the conditions. The hosts moved to 45 without loss before Mahmud struck twice in quick succession, removing Jake Weatherald for 23 and Travis Head for seven. The wickets triggered a collapse that left Australia struggling at 74/4. 

Smith played the lone warrior for the hosts, trying to rebuild the innings but couldn’t find much support from the other end as wickets kept falling. The former Australia captain scored a patient 71 off 109 balls before Mahmud returned to remove him. Mahmud took a catch of his own bowling as he snared his sixth wicket of the innings. Australia were eventually dismissed in just 53 overs, recording their lowest total in seven Tests against Bangladesh. 

Bangladesh’s response was far more assured. Mitchell Starc gave Australia an early breakthrough by removing Shadman Islam for 20, but the hosts could not build on it. Mominul Haque and Tanzid Hasan settled in and put together an unbeaten 60-run partnership to take Bangladesh to 96/1 at the close. Mominul was unbeaten on 35, while Tanzid finished the day on 32.

Bangladesh will begin Day 2 just 102 runs behind Australia, with the visitors firmly in control after a remarkable opening day in Darwin.
