Australia’s preparations for a demanding Test season have suffered an early setback after experienced fast bowler Michael Neser sustained a right calf strain during a training session. The injury is expected to keep the 36-year-old out of action for around a month. He, however, remains optimistic of recovering in time for Australia’s Test tour of South Africa in October.
Neser was not included in Australia’s squad for the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh, with Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood returning from injury to bolster the pace attack. However, he had been training as a standby option in case one of Australia’s frontline quicks suffered a late setback.
Michael Neser Injury Update
The injury occurred during a running drill at Australia’s training camp, forcing Neser into a rehabilitation programme before he can gradually resume bowling. If his recovery progresses as planned, he is expected to rebuild his workload ahead of the two-Test series in South Africa.
Neser has emerged as an important backup in Australia’s fast-bowling depth after impressing during last season’s Ashes campaign. Across five Test appearances, he has claimed 22 wickets at an average of 18.90, including his maiden five-wicket haul in Brisbane and two four-wicket performances in Melbourne and Sydney.
The Queensland pacer has also adjusted his training methods in recent years, focusing on higher-intensity bowling sessions and improved running speed, helping him consistently bowl around the 140 km/h mark.
Australia Receive Positive Fitness Updates
While Neser’s injury is the main concern from the training camp, Australia have received encouraging news regarding the rest of the squad.
Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis experienced minor back spasms during practice but is expected to be available for the opening Test against Bangladesh. Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon has also returned strongly after hamstring surgery, bowling extended spells during match simulation sessions.
Australia’s pace resources remain strong, with Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland all available, leaving selectors with healthy competition for places.
Meanwhile, Cameron Green, Marnus Labuschagne and Jake Weatherald all impressed with half-centuries in practice matches, while promising Queensland batter Jack Clayton has been named in the Cricket Australia XI for the three-day warm-up fixture against Bangladesh.
