Having opted to bat first after winning a crucial toss in what is also a must-win game for the tourists, Australia slid to 0-3 as Cooper Connolly, Matt Short and Matt Renshaw perished without scoring. It is also the fourth instance in ODI cricket that a team lost three wickets without scoring a run, with Bangladesh doing it in 2003 and Pakistan being part of the unwanted history twice in 1983 and 1997. Alex Carey was the next to depart as the Men in Yellow slumped to 25/4. Josh Inglis and Cameron Green brought some semblance of control but the scoreline soon became 81/6 as Australia were starring down the barrell.
However, Marnus Labuschagne and Xavier Bartlett fought back brilliantly, stitching a rare 100-run stand for the 7th wicket to give their side a sniff. Taskin Ahmed broke through, dismissing Bartlett (52) and Adam Zampa (0) in back-to-back deliveries to push Australia to the brink. At 187/8, Australia have given themselves a slight chance of forcing a series-decider.
The Bangla Tigers won the first ODI by 86 runs as Tanzid Hasan (54), Najmul Hossain Shanto (67) and Mossadek Hossain (86*) struck half-centuries. Hossain later also starred with the ball, picking up a couple of wickets, while Nahid Rana snared four.
