FC Barcelona gets a major boost as Spain national football team captain Rodri joins Hansi Flick’s side, fresh off a triumphant FIFA World Cup campaign. The Manchester City midfielder had a long-standing dream of joining Barca, which has finally become a reality. He has already arrived in his home country to sign his Barcelona contract after spending seven years in the Premier League. Now, fans wonder if the 2025 Ballon d’Or winner would be appointed the captain of Barcelona after his blockbuster move to La Liga.
Who is the current Barcelona captain?
As of now, Raphinha has been appointed the captain of Barcelona, club boss Hansi Flick revealed recently. While the reigning La Liga champions prepare for their final pre-season friendly against Al Ahly, the manager addressed the topic at the press conference, saying that Raphinha would wear the captain’s armband in the Gamper Trophy fixture.
“I decided the captain until we vote, because our team is not finished yet. I think we may also have some more players, or some players will leave. When it’s done, we will do the vote. Until this happens, Rapha is the captain with Eric and Pedri,” Flick said.
“Rapha will do, I know that Frenkie is the third captain because Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo are out but Frenkie at the moment is not available because he is injured,” he explained further.
Flick also hinted at a leadership change once the full squad is finalised after the summer window is closed.
Will Rodri Become Barcelona Captain?
Rodri could bring proven leadership to Barcelona if he becomes the captain. The Spain midfielder first captained his country in 2023 and has since led La Roja to major success, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His leadership experience, composure and influence in midfield could make him a natural candidate for a senior leadership role at Barca.
However, for now, Raphinha will lead the team. When the Brazilian is absent, Pedri and Garcia would be considered.
