Big Bash League 2026-27: Former England legend and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has been unveiled as the new head coach of the Sydney Thunder ahead of the 2026-27 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). Flintoff, who has played for the Brisbane Heat in seven games, will enter into his first foray in the Big Bash League as far as coaching is concerned.

The 48-year-old Englishman replaces Trevor Bayliss, who has departed from his role after spending five years with the club, including lifting the club to the final of the 2024-25 edition. However, the Thunder finished at the bottom of the points table in the 2023-24 and 2025-26 season. Sydney Thunder’s manager Trent Copeland named the appointment as the most significant acquisition in the BBL history as the former Australian seamer said, as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo:
“This is a huge day in the history of Sydney Thunder, and the BBL more broadly. Fred brings something truly unique to Sydney Thunder. He’s a global icon of the game, but more importantly he is a modern leader who understands how to build high-performance environments, connect with players as people, and set standards that last. His passion for the game, coaching itself and knowledge of Australian cricket and our Thunder program stood out during the process.”
Big Bash League 2026-27: What coaching experience does Andrew Flintoff possesses?
Flintoff, who was appointed as the coach of the SunRisers Leeds, has also experienced a two-year stint with the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred as they finished fourth in 2024 and third in 2025. Furthermore, the former Lancashire all-rounder has also served as England Lions’ coach and England A’s side in the last 12 months that includes spearheading the Lions’ side on a tour of Australia last summer that shadowed the Ashes series Down Under.
Nevertheless, Flintoff’s stint in the BBL is likely to impact his involvement with the England Lions tour of South Africa in December 2026 as it will coincide with the start of the season. Additionally, Flintoff served as a consultant for the white-ball side when Matthew Mott was the head coach. Meanwhile, the season opener of BBL 2026-27 is likely to be hosted by Chennai.
