The World no. 9 American star began his campaign against Tallon Griekspoor and had to recover from a difficult opening set before eventually winning 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2. Shelton faced another demanding four-set battle in the second round against former world No. 6 Hubert Hurkacz. The 23-year-old then prevailed 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(3), 7-5. He struck six aces, won 72% of his first-serve points and secured three breaks from 11 opportunities. Shelton also produced a tournament-best 148 mph serve during the match and remained unbeaten in tiebreaks through his first two rounds.
On the other hand, Denis Shapovalov opened his US Open campaign with a four-set victory over Miomir Kecmanovic, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(1). The Canadian relied on his first serve despite an inconsistent second serve that produced 11 double faults. He struck 19 aces, won 85% of his first-serve points and converted six of 14 break-point opportunities. Shapovalov also won 114 total points, compared to Kecmanović’s 96.
The 27-year-old produced a much more dominant display against Luca Van Assche in the second round, completing a straight-sets victory 6-0, 6-4, 7-6(5). Shapovalov took control with a first-set bagel and maintained pressure throughout the match before edging a tight third-set tiebreak. He hit 11 aces, converted seven of nine break points and won 109 total points against Van Assche’s 84.
