Ben Stokes once again grabbed the spotlight for a brutal remark after the ICC accused the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) of breaching media regulations by posting his retirement announcement mid-match. The England Test captain hung up his gloves after playing his last game against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. He informed his teammates about his decision in a heartfelt dressing room speech before the start of Day 4. A video of the same was shared by England Cricket on social media when the match was underway.
Now, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has contacted the ECB for an alleged breach of its standards for players’ and match officials’ areas (PMOA) during international matches. The board appears to have broken the law by recording Stokes’ retirement speech inside the dressing room.

When asked about the letter from the ICC earlier, the former England captain revealed that he had spoken to Neil Fairbrother and Michael Lumb from the team management, discussing how the ECB would share his retirement news. The announcement popped up on the screen just before the tea break on Day 4 when Stokes was bowling and took a wicket in the next delivery. He also opened the innings for England and scored 30 runs, as England lost the third Test by 160 runs.
Now, as the news became public, Stokes dropped a sarcastic social media post that read, “Sack Him”. Though he didn’t mention anything else, many fans felt he might have challenged the global cricket governing body or England cricket after his retirement drama.

Will the ECB face punishment for Ben Stokes’ retirement video?
Article 2.2.11 of the PMOA regulations underlines that the board should “ensure that there are no fixed or temporary video cameras or other recording equipment set up within any dressing room used by the teams for the purposes of broadcasting video or audio footage.”
The ICC also informed the ECB that any video recorded in the PMOA should not have any audio and the footage should not be released before the match ended. Despite the breach, England Cricket is expected not to face any consequences.
