The Indian contingent will be led by former World No.1 Kidambi Srikanth and teen sensation Tanvi Sharma at the BWF German Open 2026, taking place from 24 February to 1 March 2026 at the Westenergie Sporthalle, An den Sportstatten in Mulheim.
Last year’s champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark will not defend his title due to a lingering back injury. In women’s singles, Yeo Jia Min of Singapore returns to defend her crown.
This time, India will be without stalwarts like PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, and the star men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. Therefore, all eyes will be on Srikanth, who will be looking to end his quarterfinal curse, having suffered exits at the India Open and Indonesia Masters in the last-eight round.
At the Badminton Asia Team Championships 2026, India had a disappointing outing, losing to South Korea 1-3 in men’s singles and to China 0-3 in women’s team events.
The only player who was undefeated in the tournament was Srikanth. He won both his matches, defeating Jia Wei Joel Koh in the group stage and Choi Ji Hoon in the quarterfinals in straight games, sealing the only win for India.
Kidambi Srikanth is currently ranked 32 and is desperate to end his title drought. The last time he won a title was at the 2017 French Open during the BWF Superseries era.
The only Indian to ever win a German Open title is Arvind Bhat, who won in 2014. Just the next year, Kidambi Srikanth opted to change that but he lost to Chen Long in final. This time, he will aim to rewrite the history.
Joining him in the men’s singles campaign will be Kiran George and Tharun Mannepalli.
In women’s singles, Indian hopes will be pinned on world No.40 Tanvi Sharma. The 17-year-old had an exceptional season in 2025, reaching World No.1 in the BWF Junior Rankings and becoming the first Indian female in 17 years to win a medal at the BWF World Junior Championships, securing silver.
Other players in the women’s singles category include Rakshitha Ramraj, Malvika Bansod, Isharani Baruah, and Tasnim Mir.
The only doubles pair representing India in the women’s doubles main draw is Ashwini Bhat–Shikha Gautam. There will be no Indian representatives in men’s and mixed doubles.
The BWF German Open 2026 will take place from February 24 at the Westenergie Sporthalle, An den Sportstätten in Mulheim.
