Mohun Bagan: The Indian Super League (ISL) title race is at fever pitch after a dramatic 1-1 draw between Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) and FC Goa at the Fatorda Stadium on May 9, 2026. But the shared point leaves the door wide open for their rivals when the Mariners were hoping they could pull away at the summit. And it sets up a grandstand finish to the regular season.

FC Goa vs Mohun Bagan: The Fatorda Standoff

Australian marksman Jamie Maclaren came up with a rare blunder by Sandesh Jhingan to score the first goal in the 55th minute and put Mohun Bagan in the driver’s seat. The Gaurs, however, would not give in. In the 67th minute, Ronney Willson Kharbudon equalised with a cross-cum-shot that totally bamboozled Vishal Kaith and soared into the far corner. Goa held strong under the late pressure from the defending champions to secure a point.

The Current ISL Standings: Where Is Mohun Bagan?

The draw brings Mohun Bagan to 21 points from 10 matches. Crucially, this keeps them level on points with arch-rivals East Bengal FC and resurgent Jamshedpur FC. But with the league shield – and automatic AFC Champions League spot – going to the side that finishes top of the regular season, every point now has the weight of a trophy.

Scenarios for the ISL Title: Can Mohun Bagan Win?

Can Mohun Bagan still win the title? The short answer is yes, but the path is much narrower now. Here are the main scenarios:

  1. The Kolkata Derby Decider: Mohun Bagan’s next encounter with East Bengal is now more or less a “final.” A win in the derby will not only give them the local bragging rights but also a decisive three-point cushion over their closest rivals.

  2. Maintaining the Defensive Edge: The Mariners still have the best defensive record in the league, despite the draw (7 goals against). They must stop any more freak goals like Willson’s fluke equaliser damaging their points tally in the remaining games if they are to win the title.

  3. The Jamshedpur Factor: Jamshedpur FC are the dark horses in this race. Jamshedpur can top the table if they win their remaining games and Mohun Bagan and East Bengal cancel each other out in their head-to-head.

The 1-1 draw in Goa was a lost opportunity for Sergio Lobera’s men to take full control. The Mariners will now have to rediscover their clinical touch if they are to successfully defend their ISL Shield and keep the trophy in the Green and Maroon half of the city of Kolkata.
