Chelsea are reportedly keen to get ahead of the competition for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and could look to agree a deal now before bringing the 23-year-old to Stamford Bridge next summer. The Blues already had a £60 million offer rejected during the recent transfer window but remain determined to land the highly-rated midfielder.
Chelsea Make Alex Scott Their Top Midfield Target After £60m Bid Rejected
Chelsea remain firmly interested in Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and are considering whether to try and secure his signing now before completing his move to Stamford Bridge next summer. The Blues have made the 23-year-old their preferred midfield target and believe he would be an ideal fit for Xabi Alonso’s plans.
Bournemouth made it clear throughout the summer that Scott was not available, despite Chelsea testing their resolve with a bid worth more than £60 million. The Cherries rejected the proposal outright, maintaining that they had no intention of selling one of their key players. Chelsea also made another approach late in the window but were again told that Scott was not for sale.
The situation became more pressing for Chelsea on Deadline Day after Enzo Fernandez left for Manchester City in a British-record-equalling transfer. The London club turned to Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as an alternative, but their efforts ultimately failed after Monaco pulled out of the proposed deal late in the window. Chelsea subsequently revisited the possibility of signing Scott but could not convince Bournemouth to change their stance.
Despite those setbacks, Chelsea have not abandoned their pursuit. Scott has continued to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most highly rated young midfielders since joining Bournemouth from Bristol City, and the Blues see his ability and profile as a strong match for Alonso’s midfield plans.
Alex Scott Contract Situation Gives Chelsea Fresh Hope of Summer Transfer
Scott’s contract situation could eventually give Chelsea an opening. The Channel Islands-born midfielder is tied to Bournemouth until 2028 but has rejected several proposals to extend his stay at the Vitality Stadium. Bournemouth have even explored offering improved terms that would include a release clause, but Scott has so far declined to commit to a new agreement.
Chelsea do not expect Bournemouth to sell Scott during the January transfer window, particularly after the club’s firm stance over the summer. However, that has not stopped the Blues from exploring whether they can reach an agreement in advance that would effectively secure the midfielder now, with Scott then moving to west London next summer. Any deal would have to work for Bournemouth, who must weigh the benefits of a guaranteed transfer against the risk of entering the final year of Scott’s contract without an extension.
Bournemouth therefore face an important decision over the coming months. If Scott continues to reject a new contract, the club could wait until next summer to consider offers, when he would have only 12 months remaining on his deal. Chelsea could then have greater negotiating leverage, although the example of Manchester City securing a substantial fee for Rodri despite his contract situation shows that a player approaching the final year of his deal can still command a significant transfer fee. With Scott remaining Chelsea’s priority, the situation could develop further if other top clubs join the race.
