A fascinating face-off awaits on the opening matchday of the 2026-27 Premier League, with former Real Madrid managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa having shifted their base to England. The Spanish duo, who played together for the national team and at club level, left their homeland this summer with an aim to revive their coaching careers. Alonso, who was sacked by Real Madrid in January after a string of dismal performances, has been appointed as the Chelsea manager, while his successor at Santiago Bernabeu, Arbeloa, has taken up a new challenge at Fulham.

Chelsea and Fulham will open their Premier League campaign with a West London derby on August 25 at Craven Cottage. Arbeloa will have the home advantage and hopes to kick off his journey with the Lilywhites on a positive note. Meanwhile, the Blues will aim to return to European competitions under Alonso after a forgettable season that saw them finish tenth on the PL table.

Chelsea Eye Resurgence Under Alonso

Alonso, who shot to fame after winning the Bundesliga with an underrated Bayer Leverkusen side, has reportedly agreed to become Chelsea head coach on a long-term contract running until June 2029, with the London-based club showing its faith in the Spaniard to lead a fresh era at Stamford Bridge.

The agreement includes an option to extend for an additional season based on performance. Alonso arrives at Stamford Bridge with a reputation for tactical intelligence, having earned widespread acclaim for his progressive style of play and ability to nurture young talent. Chelsea expect him to oversee squad rebuilding, integrate academy prospects and restore the club’s competitiveness in both domestic and continental circuits.

Fulham See Long-Term Future With Arbeloa

Arbeloa has joined Fulham on a reported three-year contract, keeping him at Craven Cottage until 2029. The former Spain international replaces Marco Silva and takes charge of a Premier League club for the first time. After leaving Madrid at the end of this season, Arbeloa is expected to keep his focus on long-term development at Craven Cottage.
