The Chinese Grand Prix is back and is scheduled to take place at the Shanghai International Circuit from 13th to 15th March 2026. It will be the second round of the 2026 Formula One World Championship, carrying a lot of stakes. The weekend could be the day that the sport changes forever, as it will see the first-ever Sprint event of F1's new technical era. These new cars will be shorter, lighter, and more agile, and the power will be split equally between the internal combustion engine and the electrical energy. That means the 19th running of the race in Shanghai will not only be a competition of strategies but also the race venue that has been closely associated with the likes of Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton.
The 91st and final win of that illustrious career 💫

Shanghai International Circuit is a masterpiece of engineering built on marshy land that was reclaimed in Jiading District. In order to establish this venue, the engineers had to drive 40, 000 stone piles into the loose soil to form a solid base capable of holding the high-speed racing track. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the track layout is physically shaped like the Chinese character “上” (Shàng), which translates to "above" or "to ascend" and is the first character in the city's name. The design of the paddock and the main grandstand is a nod to the classic Chinese architecture and, particularly, the Yu Garden. They harmonise modern technology with cultural legacy.
By numbers, Lewis Hamilton is the most successful driver in the history of the Chinese Grand Prix. He holds the record for the most wins and pole positions at this track. The circuit hosted the 2019 historical 1,000th World Championship race, where Hamilton managed a convincing win for Mercedes.

Traditionally, Hamilton has had a great run at this track, but the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix turned out to be a challenge for him, as he was disqualified after the race due to the technical plank wear that was not within the regulations. This event made it possible for Oscar Piastri to keep his position as the reigning champion coming into the 2026 season.
The first real test of the new Sprint format under the newest technical rules will be the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix. The cars of 2026 weigh 30kg less and are much more agile as they have active aerodynamics, and the amount of electrical power released via the MGU-K is significantly higher. The 1. 2 km back straight will be the main spot for the new Manual Override Mode, allowing drivers to use extra energy to make overtakes. Since there will be only one hour of practice before Sprint Qualifying, teams will be under great pressure to get their setups right for the challenging 2700degree Turn 1 spiral.
