The wait is almost over! With only six days to go, the sports world is turning its attention to Scotland for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. The action kicks off on Thursday, July 23, and runs until Sunday, August 2, 2026. This edition is special because it is a slimmed-down, focused festival of sport. After the Australian state of Victoria unexpectedly pulled out as host due to costs, Glasgow stepped in at the last minute to save the event. To keep things sustainable, the Games will feature a compact 10-sport programme held across just four existing venues within a close eight-mile corridor.
Big star withdrawals and heartbreaking injuries
Just days before the opening ceremony, the Games suffered a massive blow with the high-profile withdrawal of Team England gymnastics legend Max Whitlock. The three-time Olympic gold medallist was forced to pull out after sustaining a severe hand injury during a training session.
Whitlock, who had come out of retirement to eye the LA28 Olympics, shared his deep disappointment on Instagram, stating he was “absolutely gutted” to miss out on what would have been his fourth Commonwealth Games.

Despite the injuries, the star power remains immense. Swimming heavyweights like England’s Adam Peaty and Australia’s five-time Olympic gold medallist Kaylee McKeown are already touching down in Scotland. Why is it called the Commonwealth Games?
